Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

Sunday 9 December 2012

Hey everyone! Hope you’ve had a great weekend! Today’s post is the long time coming 2nd craft/DIY post here on Holl JC. But never mind it’s here now, and it’s a Christmas one to boot! Kirstie Allsopp is brilliant and I watch all her crafty programs without fail! And on one of her Christmas specials I saw her make one of these and nearly burst with joy. I knew I just had to make them! So when I decided that I was going to make rather than buy the majority of my friends Christmas presents this year, I knew this was going to be at the top of the crafting list. You may or may not have guessed from the picture above but I'm talking about snow-globes! Yep snow-globes! They're so much fun to make and once you know how they're really easy and don't take too long either. The pictures may look a bit all over the place and that is simply because they're a mixture from yesterday and today. Some of the ones I took yesterday were really dark and you couldn't see what was happening, so when I did some more globes this afternoon I got my mum to take a few more pictures for me. So here we go;
  What you will need:
-Jam jars/baby food jars
-Plastic figures (you could use cake toppers)
-glitter
-Glycerin (available from chemists, mine’s from boots)
-enamel paint/spray
-glue gun
-water

Instructions;
1)Paint/spray your lids your chosen colour with the enamel paint. You might not have to do this step, as your lids could already be plain or the colour you want.
You may want to do this step a few hours or days before, as it takes a while to dry, and could need more than one coat.

2)Put on your favourite Christmas CD. In my opinion you can’t beat the classics!

3)  Glue your plastic figure to the top of your lid with your glue gun. Leaving to dry and seal for a few minutes.

4) Fill your jar nearly to the top with water.
5) Add your chosen glitter, about half to 3/4 of a teaspoon full.

6) Stir well until most of the glitter has gone to the bottom, and there is hardly any left floating on the top.

7) Add a dash of the glycerin and stir well to make sure it has properly mixed with the water and glitter. The glycerin is the part of the snow-globe that makes the glitter fall as if it’s actually snowing!

8) This is the tricky part where you’ll need to be speedy! Quickly but carefully glue around the outside of your figure/outer parts of the lid. (see picture)

9) Quickly put the lid back on the jar and secure/screw back on as you would normally. Then press to make sure the glue and lid have sealed. This creates a waterproof seal so that the water doesn't leak.
10) If it looks like your lid has gone on slightly wonky or hasn't sealed in one place then use your glue gun to seal it from the outside. But be careful not to get glue all over your jar, if you have to do this step.
11)  Now for the moment of truth! EEP! Over the sink turn your jar upside down, if it does leak then go to step 10.
If not shake and watch the magic! Just be careful not to drop it!
